Carrefour (China) Foundation for Food Safety

Carrefour (China) Foundation for Food Safety (hereunder refers to “the Foundation”) was registered on May the 10th ,2004 in Hong Kong. The Foundation, financed by Carrefour (China) is a non-profit organization aimed to facilitate development of food safety in China.

The main role of the Foundation is to improve awareness of food safety across China and boost the development of social economies in other related sectors.

Great importance is attached by the Foundation to cooperate with relevant government organs, production and distribution sectors, higher education institutions as well as end-users, and especially to improving the production of farm products in central and western China.

The following programs have been conducted by the Foundation on the basis of supporting the policies and activities of the government on food safety from 2004 to December 2007.

Training:

Training For Direct Purchase Farm:

In order to increase the farmers’ income, and improve their technologic skill, with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and the ministry of Commerce, the Foundation provided the Direct Purchase training for farms’ Cooperatives. This training was aimed at helping local government to promote the development of local agriculture and helping the farmers to produce the good product with better quality and lower price. Since 2008, Carrefour (China) Foundation for Food Safety has organized 25 Direct Purchase training programs in 17 provinces or autonomous regions, such as Wuchuan county of Inner Mongolia, Luochuan, Zhouzhi county of Shanxi province, Nanchang city & Ganzhou city of Jiangxi province, Haikou & Sanya city of Hainan province, Dujiangyan city of Sichuan province, Zhanjiang city & Guangzhou city of Guangdong province, Dangshan county of Anhui province, Urmqi & Tulufan city of Xinjiang province, Zhao county & Zhangjiakou of Hebei province, Pinghe county of Fujian province, Dingxi city of Gansu province, Zigui county of Hubei province, Nanjing city & Yancheng city of Jiangsu province, Shanghai, Kunming city of Yunnan, Hangzhou city of Zhejiang Province, Changchun City of Jilin Province and Guilin City of Guangxi Province. 2850 farmers were trained. Especially the training on “Carrefour Partnership Day”, it upgraded the knowledge structure of Farmer’s cooperatives in both theory and practice.

Training in Central and Western China

The Foundation organized 24 training programs on Market Distribution & Quality Safety of Farm Product catering for managers of farm product bases and government officials were provided by the Foundation and the departments of Market system Development of Ministry of Commerce for a total of 3911 participants in Shanxi, Hubei, Xinjiang, Hunan, Yunnan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Qinghai, Jiangxi, Anhui, Fujian, Sichuan, Tibet, Heilongjiang and Henan.

Overseas Training

The Foundation also organized overseas trainings for local government officials so as to acquire modern supply chain knowledge and to improve the managerial competence.

TV Charity Program:

In 2006, on the occasion of the Consumer's Day, the Foundation sponsored a food safety program broadcasted on March, 11th and 12th on CCTV-7 with the support of the ministry of commerce and National 3-Green Project Office.

Seminar:

October 2004

The Foundation co-organized the "International Seminar on Agriculture Products Safety" with the Market system Development Department of the Ministry of Commerce.

June 2005

With the support of the Ministry of Commerce, the Foundation organized the "China Europe Seminar on Food Safety and Quality management" in Guangzhou and in Shanghai.

November 2005

The Foundation supported the Food Safety Seminar and Expo on "Three Green Project” which are organized by the Ministry of Commerce, State Food and Drug Administration, etc.

January 2006

The Foundation organized the "China Europe Seminar on Food Safety and Quality Management" in Tianjin with the cooperation of Tianjin Food Safety Committee, and in Beijing with the cooperation of Beijing Food Safety Administration and Municipal Bureau of Commerce.

June 2006

The Foundation organized the "China Europe Seminar on Agricultural Product Traceability" in Shenzhen and Chengdu, in cooperation with Shenzhen Food Safety Committee and Chengdu Commerce Bureau.

Nutrition Week:

In July 2006, the Foundation organized the Nutrition Week in the 6 Carrefour Beijing Stores in cooperation with International Life Sciences Institute Focal Point in China and different Chinese government administrations and got great success.

With a lot of experience, Nutrition Weeks were organized by the Foundation with collaboration of local nutrition societies in eight major cities in 2007, i.e., Harbin, Shanghai, Tianjin, Beijing, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu.

In 2008, the Foundation has organized the Nutrition Week in Shanghai (7-9, 14-16 Nov), Guangzhou (14-16, 21-23 Nov), Beijing (16-23 Nov) and Kunming (21-23, 28-30 Nov).

In 2010, the foundation organized “Fortified Food Week” with the theme of of “Balanced Nutrition, Healthy Family”, which is held in all 163 stores of Carrefour China. This event aims to encourage consumers to form a correct and healthy eating habit and balance their dietary structure by promoting fortified food.

Food Safety week:

In order to publicize the Food Safety common sense to consumers and to introduce Chinese government's achievements on Food Safety, the Foundation organized the "China Food Safety Propaganda Week" in Carrefour Beijing Maliandao Store in May 2006. Officials from different government administrations and Ministries attended the event.

In 2007, Food safety Weeks were organized by the Foundation with support and participation of local governments in major cities, including Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Jinan and Qingdao. A good variety of activities such as distributing free leaflets on food safety, donating books, setting up the consulting tables and inviting consumers to visit hygiene audit in stores helped the consumers understand more about food safety.

On 15th -21th March, 10th -16th July, 8th -15th September, 8th and 18th November, 2008, the Foundation has organized the Food Safety Week and Employee Training in Beijing, Shanghai, Kunming and Zhengzhou.

Foundation cooperated with 3 Green office and gave them great support for their “Go to countryside project”.

Carrefour Training on Food Safety and Quality Control:

Training programs on food safety and quality control were provided by the Foundation with cooperation of local authorities in food safety in Guangzhou, Kunming, Shanghai and Fuzhou respectively on April 16 and 20, May 10 and August 9, 2007 for improving awareness of food safety among Carrefour staff, standardizing food operation process and ensured food safety, which were helpful to control food safety and playing a leading role in the industry.

Agreement between the Foundation and the Food Fortification Office of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Promoting Iron-Fortified Soy Sauce:

The signing ceremony for the agreement with the Food Fortification Office of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (“FFO”) was organized by the Foundation in Beijing on May 24, 2007 to promote China’s Food Fortification Plan. This event shows the active efforts made by Carrefour in promoting fortified food produced in China.

CCFA CEO Summit

In order to promote the cooperation between retailers and cooperatives, further discuss the sustainability of this kind of cooperation and share the experiences with other companies, on 8th, Nov 2008, The Foundation involved in the CEO Summit of Top-100 China Chain Retailers as the sponsor, Mr. Eric Legros, the President & CEO of Carrefour (China), made a presentation with the topic of :”Develop Efficient Network Between Farmers & Retailer, Ensure the Quality of Fresh Product”.

Round Table Meeting

In order to improve the professional production of agricultural product, increase the farmers’ income, enhance the modern distribution of agricultural products, and promote the concept of “cooperation between farmers and retailers”, on 25th , November, 2008, the Ministry of Commerce and the Foundation organized the Round Table Meeting on “Promoting the Cooperation between Farmers and Retailers on Agricultural Product”. Officials from MOFCOM, MOA, AQSIQ and some experts attended the meeting.
